Open House Information 2018-2019
August 6, 2018
Dear Students and Parents,
Hello and welcome to the 2018-19 school year at Muhlenberg South Elementary! I am looking forward to “THE GREATEST” year. Please allow me to introduce myself:
I am Mrs. Marinda Duvall. I am a 1989 graduate of Muhlenberg Central High School and a 2006 graduate of Murray State University. I completed my Masters Degree with a Reading and Writing Emphasis in 2013. This is my thirteenth year of teaching at Muhlenberg South Elementary. I have been married to my wonderful husband Barry Duvall, County Historian, for 7 years. He takes us on several adventures through his passion for History. I have a 9 year old granddaughter, whom I’m sure you will hear lots of stories about this year.
To get us off to a great start and get our classrooms running smoothly, I have a few “housekeeping” items to let you know about:
Important!!! School begins at 7:25 AM. Doors will open at 6:55 AM. It is very important that your child arrives at school on time EVERY day. Our day is organized during the first few minutes. Arriving at school on time and regular attendance are the MOST important factors to successful learning!
Supplies: Please take a moment to say “Thank You” to our Family Resource Center and PTO for providing this year’s classroom supplies.
Character Development: This year the Fifth Grade is enthusiastically continuing a character building program called Bucket Filling. Bucket filling is an easy-to-understand concept: Everyone carries an invisible bucket that holds our good thoughts and feelings. When our buckets are full, we feel happy and when our buckets are empty, we feel sad. Children understand that they can fill buckets when they do and say things that are kind, considerate, caring and respectful. They also learn that when they are mean, inconsiderate, uncaring or disrespectful, they can dip into buckets and remove those good feelings. We are encouraging everyone’s efforts to be bucket fillers at home, at school, and everywhere they go. If you would like to learn more about bucket filling, visit the Bucket Fillers website at www.bucketfillers101.com. This concept comes from the book Have you Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud.
Discipline: We do expect excellent behavior from all of our students. We will begin working on classroom routines and rules on the first days of school. We will practice behaviors that will make our classroom run effectively. MSES uses CHAMPs as a school-wide discipline model. CHAMPs is a proactive and positive classroom management system used to encourage motivated and responsible students. By actively framing our lessons using the CHAMP acronym (C-Conversation, H-Help, A-Activity, M-Movement, and P-Participation) we instruct students in our expectations regarding classroom and school wide academics and behavior. By systematically teaching our classroom rules, goals and expectations, the students will experience more success.
Your students will also be informed of our ABC’s for Success. These guidelines are not classroom rules and consequences, but are school-wide goals to strive toward. In addition to applying them towards academics, these guidelines can be applied towards teaching appropriate behavioral expectations. We believe that teachers not only need to provide their students with a strong academic program, but also specific information about attitudes, traits, and behaviors that will help them succeed in school and throughout their lives.
ABC’s for Success:
Always try
Be responsible
Cooperate with others
Do your best
Everyone is treated with respect (including yourself)
Water Bottles: The children are allowed to bring a water bottle to keep on their desks during the school day. Please be sure that the bottle has a screw-on cap and will not leak or spill if turned over. Please send WATER only. Also, encourage your child to bring the water bottle home on Fridays for washing!
Transportation: We must know how your child will be transported to and from school on a normal basis. Please note that we MUST be notified of any change in your child’s normal after-school transportation by NOTE or FAX . You may also inform the office personnel in person of any changes that need to be made. Otherwise, your child WILL be sent home by his/her normal transportation.
Friday Notes: Fifth Grade Newsletters will be sent home on most Fridays. Please read over this important note, as it will contain classroom/school activities and notices. If your student doesn’t automatically hand this to you on Friday, please ask your student to share this vital piece of communication. Often times most of your questions about up and coming events are answered in this newsletter.
Class Schedules: Daily class schedules will be sent home during the first full week of school.
Snack Time: Your child may purchase a snack from the school or bring one from home. Please note there are several food allergies in our classrooms. Students are not allowed to share snacks with one another. Peanut/nut allergies can be fatal! Please take the time to read food labels. Please send healthy snacks that can be eaten in about 10 minutes.
Testing: Fifth Graders complete the Reading, Math, and Social Studies portion of the K-Prep test. Fifth Graders are also scored on their On-Demand writing pieces.
Assignment Books: Please check your child’s assignment book every day for assignments that need to be completed, notes from the teacher or important reminders. If you sign your child’s assignment book, you are saying that you have looked over their assignments and know what they are expected to complete for homework that night.
I encourage your questions, comments and/or concerns throughout this school year. Please feel free to call the school, leave a message for me to call you back, send an email or send a note by your child. Your support of your child’s education is vital to his/her success!
I look forward to THE GREATEST year ever!!
Sincerely,
Marinda Duvall

Open House 2017-2018
Dear Parents/Guardians and MSES 5th Grade Students,
We are extra excited about the upcoming school year and we're making plans for an EPIC year! A big part of our planning involves changing our instructional program to a team teach approach. We would like to explain the plan along with other details about how we do things and learn in fifth-grade. The fifth-grade teaching team will have two parent/student orientation meetings during Open House time on Tuesday, August 8th. The meetings will last approximately 30 - 40 minutes each. You may choose to attend an orientation at 4:00 or 4:45 p.m. in the fifth-grade pod. The fifth-grade classrooms will then be open for short visits from 5:30-6:00 p.m. if you are not able to attend one of the orientation meetings. Please make plans to join us for one of these special informational sessions.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Duvall and the MSES Fifth-Grade Teaching Team

Homework Folders 2017 -2018
Please check all the papers in the red "Homework" folder. There may be a paper(s) to sign and
return each week. It is especially important to check the folder on Friday. We will be sending home a newsletter on most Fridays with information specific to Fifth Grade. The Friday Newsletter can also be found on our classroom webpage.
Assignment Books 2017-2018
Your child will be given an assignment book at the beginning of the school year and will need to take it back and forth from school to home. He/she will copy the daily assignments for each subject from the dry erase board, and place a "check mark" next to the assignment when completed. If the assignment is not checked, then he/she will need to finish the assignment for homework. Please sign each day and feel free to ask questions or make comments as needed in the assignment book. Teachers and parents are partners in their child's education and we must communicate on a regular basis. The assignment book is a great communication tool!
